There are HS-Germany (HS-GERMAN INOX / HS-CUROGAN) brand-name stamps on each Sprenger collar. They are on swivels, rings and other surfaces. This stamping serves as confirmation of the brand identification for every Sprenger product.

Furthermore, there are additional labels with a red dot on all pinch collars of stainless steel. This helps also to differentiate a stainless steel collar from a one of chrome-plated steel at a glance.

Pinch collars are safe and effective at proper use despite their frightening look. Sometimes they are even safer than chain collars.

The prong collar puts even pressure around the whole dog's neck. The prongs act like mother-dog teeth. The collar does NOT damage the trachea when used properly.

There are horror stories about injuries caused by prong collars, but it is a very irresponsible owner, who reduces to these cases; a dog owner, which ties the dog outside with the prong collar on abuses the collar.

Please, consult a dog trainer before using a pinch collar. Use the collar under supervision and on advice of experienced trainer.

A prong collar is a training tool and it is not intended for a long-term use. It is not your dog's basic collar and it is not used for daily outings.

Make sure you have put the collar on your dog correctly. A pinch collar should sit right behind the ears and under the jaw line.

Use short and firm jerks when the dog pulls or springs forward responding to stimuli. Then relieve the pressure. The dog will let up when feels the pull and you are less likely to make more than a quick jerk.

The pinch collar is NOT used for:

a puppy under 6 months;

an aggressive dog;

a fearful or shy dog.

Pinch collars are designed for larger, already trained dogs to teach leash manners. A prong collar is a measure of last resort as usual. It is used for those dogs whose problems with pulling are not resolved through other methods. You should not start to teach a puppy to walk on a leash with the most intense mean. Prong collars are unsafe for puppies under 6 months and older. They are not recommended unless other training means do not help.

No collar will resolve the problem of bad behaviour. This should be done with effective training. A pinch collar gives a bit of assisted control over a larger dog, which pulls hard, but the collar will not substitute training.

• Put a tape measure closely to a dog's coat directly behind the ears and under the jaw line.
• Keep in mind that two fingers should fit between the dog's neck and the collar. You can measure the dog's neck and add 2 inches as well.
• When the collar is on your dog's neck, two fingers should slide under the collar and the dog's neck.
• You need a smaller size if there is extra room. Remove some links.
• The collar is too small if both fingers don't slip. Add some links in this case.

A pinch collar is placed around the neck of the dog in a specific manner to be effective and safe for training. A prong collar must sit just behind the ears and under the jaw line. The collar will be ineffective if to place it lower. The collar has to fit snugly because it does not move around the proper position. Remove some prongs if the collar is loose.

NEVER put on the pinch collar over the dog's head! It will injure the dog's eyes! The right way to the prong collar on is to unhook links or release a buckle.

Make certain that the prongs are not twisted. Put the unfastened collar on the dog's neck so that the O-ring is placed on the right side of the neck (not on the bottom or the top). Connect the collar in such a way: squeeze the end of one link together and place it in the loop of another link.

There are pinch collars with quick-release buckles and you need not pinch the links to put the collar on and off.

There are also pinch collars with click-lock buckles. You just unlock the buckle and place the collar around the dog's neck and lock the buckle instead of the links opening and closing.

The part of the prong collar that serves for a lead attachment should be placed upward just behind the dog's ears.

You can attach the leash to the pinch collar in 2 ways: to the live ring or to the fixed ring. Which one to choose depends on the dog and your training purposes.

Connect the leash with the fixed ring at first training sessions. This method is recommended at the beginning of training to help to come in contact with the dog because the collar tightening is always stable in this case.

The collar will tighten around the dog's neck at tension if to attach the lead to a live ring. This way is used when the dog disobeys to correct its behavior.

Please, choose the pinch collar according to the next criteria:

• neck size of a dog
• weight of a dog
• length and color of a dog's coat
• the correction level you want to reach
• allergy to nickel

Discoloration of your dog's coat flows from many causes. Allergy to nickel is one of them. Herm Sprenger offers a solution - prong collars of brass and curogan. These alloys contain no nickel. They are considered the safest ones for dogs with delicate skin. However, even the collar of curogan or brass may stain the dog's fur for no apparent reason.

Unfortunately we do not have the right to assure you that curogan prong collars will not provoke coat discoloration. Curogan is less likely to stain fur being 100% nickel-free if to compare it with any other metal alloy. However, there have been cases of dog coat staining by a curogan prong collar.

A collar of stainless steel is less likely to rust because it contains nickel and chromium not on the surface only. That is why the microscopic layer forms anew itself when steel is scratched or cut. A chrome-plated steel collar can get rusted if damaged.

A Neck Tech dog collar is intended for those dogs which do not need a hard behavior correction and are long-haired (prongs may get entangled in long dog fur). The collar works well on short-haired dogs also. It looks like an ordinary metal collar without a nylon cover.

Fun and Sport are two modifications of the Neck-Tech dog collar.

The Neck Tech Sport is a traditional prong collar. The prongs are sharp and they act as in an ordinary pinch collar. The difference is in more attractive look. The opinion of experienced trainers is that dogs response more attentively when wear the Neck Tech rather than with an ordinary prong collar on. The dog trainer communicates more gently and in a more understandable way for the dog, especially for a short-haired one by using the Neck Tech Sport.

The Neck Tech Fun is a pinch collar without prongs. It is a light version that is gentle to the dog's neck. The model is designed for those who like the look of a Neck Tech collar, but do not need it for dog training.

The prong collar with a nylon loop is tightened much more than the basic quick-detach collar when pulled. It is suitable for balkier dogs, which do not respond to a classic prong collar. Learn more how to choose prong collar.

Quick-release collars are equipped with a unique scissor type snap, which is operated with one hand only.

It is an excellent option for those who have complications with an ordinary prong collar. But be careful! Quick-release collars release your dog quickly. It can come unhooked at the wrong time!

Rubber can rub against your dog's coat and cause pain. Metal moves over a dog's hair smoothly.

You need to know the following to define the size of extra links:

• the model of the collar - this is the easiest way to identify the size of the link and the metal of the collar when you know the model of the item.

• prong's length - please, measure the prong's length and check the chart to define the size of the link:

• dog's weight - every collar model is designed to withstand certain load. Please, see the chart above and check which pinch collar is preferable for your dog depending on its weight.
• prong's material - identify the material of the pinch collar. Curogan and black stainless steel are the easiest to define by their color. All stainless steel prong collars have an additional tag with a red dot. This tag helps also to distinguish a stainless steel collar from a chromed steel one at the first glimpse.
